A pool can look perfectly clear and still need chlorine. The right answer to how much chlorine to add to pool water is not a fixed capful or weekly scoop. It depends on your pool’s gallon capacity, its current free chlorine reading, the type and strength of chlorine you use, and how quickly heat, rain, swimmers, and debris are using chlorine up.

For most residential pools, the practical goal is to test first, then add only enough sanitizer to bring free chlorine back into its recommended range. That approach prevents the two problems Houston-area pool owners see most often: water that turns cloudy or green after chlorine falls too low, and unnecessary chemical use from adding more than the pool needs.

Start With a Free Chlorine Target

Free chlorine, often shown as FC on a test kit, is the chlorine available to sanitize the water. For many outdoor residential pools, a free chlorine level between 1 and 3 parts per million (ppm) is a reasonable everyday target. In warm weather, during heavy use, or after a strong rainstorm, keeping it closer to 2 to 3 ppm is often more dependable.

There is one major exception: cyanuric acid, also called stabilizer or CYA. Stabilizer protects chlorine from being quickly burned off by sunlight, but higher CYA levels require a higher free chlorine level to remain effective. A pool with a moderate stabilizer level may do well at 2 to 4 ppm, while a pool with elevated CYA may need a different target entirely.

That is why a chlorine reading alone does not tell the full story. Test free chlorine and stabilizer regularly, especially when the water has been difficult to keep clear. If your pool uses salt chlorine generation, tablets, liquid chlorine, or stabilized granular chlorine, CYA can change over time.

Calculate How Much Chlorine to Add to Pool Water

The basic calculation is simple: determine how many ppm you need to raise free chlorine, then use the dosage guidance for your chlorine product and pool size.

For example, assume you have a 15,000-gallon pool. Your test shows 1 ppm of free chlorine, and you want to raise it to 3 ppm. You need to add enough chlorine to increase FC by 2 ppm.

With 10% liquid chlorine, one gallon raises free chlorine by about 10 ppm in 10,000 gallons of water. In a 15,000-gallon pool, that same gallon raises chlorine by roughly 6.7 ppm. To raise the pool by 2 ppm, you would add about 38 ounces, or just under one-third of a gallon.

A useful rule of thumb for 10% liquid chlorine is:

  • In a 10,000-gallon pool, about 13 ounces raises free chlorine by 1 ppm.
  • In a 15,000-gallon pool, about 19 ounces raises free chlorine by 1 ppm.
  • In a 20,000-gallon pool, about 26 ounces raises free chlorine by 1 ppm.
  • Stronger 12.5% liquid chlorine requires slightly less product, while weaker chlorine requires more.

Check the percentage printed on the container before measuring. Chlorine loses strength as it sits, particularly when stored in heat, so an older bottle may not raise chlorine as much as expected.

If You Use Granular Chlorine or Tablets

Granular chlorine is not interchangeable with liquid chlorine. Calcium hypochlorite, commonly called cal-hypo, adds calcium along with chlorine. It can be useful for certain pools, but repeated use can contribute to high calcium hardness, which may lead to scale on tile, equipment, and pool surfaces.

Dichlor and trichlor products add stabilizer along with chlorine. Trichlor tablets are convenient for gradual chlorination, but they are acidic and continuously increase CYA. They should not be the only chlorine source indefinitely without regular water testing.

Always follow the dosage instructions on the specific product label. The product’s active chlorine percentage, not just the weight of the container, determines how much it will raise your free chlorine level.

Why Your Pool May Need More Chlorine Than Usual

Chlorine demand changes. If you add the same amount every week without testing, you will eventually either underdose or overdose.

Houston heat and direct sun can consume chlorine quickly, especially when stabilizer is low. A busy weekend of swimming, leaves in the skimmer, pollen, lawn debris, or a heavy rain can also create more work for chlorine. Rainwater itself does not always “remove” chlorine, but it can dilute the water, introduce contaminants, and upset the balance that was keeping the pool clear.

Cloudy water, visible algae, a strong chlorine-like odor, or a free chlorine reading that disappears soon after dosing can point to a larger chemistry issue. In those situations, simply adding a routine amount of chlorine may not solve the problem. The pool may need more targeted treatment based on its stabilizer level, pH, combined chlorine reading, circulation, and filtration condition.

Test Before You Add, Then Retest

A reliable test kit is the foundation of chlorine dosing. Test free chlorine at least two or three times per week during the swimming season, and more often during extreme heat, storms, or algae recovery. Test at roughly the same time of day when possible so you can recognize patterns.

Take the sample from elbow depth, away from return jets and skimmers. If you have just added chemicals, allow the pump to circulate the water before retesting. For liquid chlorine, 30 to 60 minutes of circulation is often enough to get a useful reading, although a longer period may be appropriate when correcting larger imbalances.

Also keep an eye on pH. Chlorine generally performs best when pH is in the normal pool range, usually around 7.2 to 7.8. If pH is too high, chlorine can be less effective even when the test shows an acceptable FC number.

Add Chlorine Safely and Evenly

Run the pump when adding chlorine so it disperses through the water instead of sitting in one concentrated area. For liquid chlorine, slowly pour it close to the pool surface in front of a return jet, moving around the perimeter as you pour. Avoid splashing clothing, decking, or nearby surfaces.

Never mix chlorine with other chemicals, whether dry or liquid. Do not add different products to the same bucket, feeder, or container. If you are making more than one water-balance adjustment, add one chemical at a time and give the pool adequate circulation between additions.

Store chlorine upright in its original container, in a dry, ventilated space away from direct sun, heat sources, and other pool chemicals. In the Houston area, a hot garage can shorten the useful life of liquid chlorine considerably.

When a Normal Dose Is Not Enough

If algae is visible, the water is turning green, or free chlorine will not hold overnight, your pool likely has an active chlorine demand. This is not the time to guess with an extra tablet or a small splash of liquid chlorine. The proper chlorine level for algae treatment depends heavily on the pool’s stabilizer level.

You should also look at circulation and filtration. A dirty filter, weak pump flow, clogged skimmer basket, or equipment problem can keep chlorine from doing its job efficiently. Chemistry and equipment work together. Clear, balanced water requires both.
