The biggest mistake is treating pH and alkalinity as if they are the same reading. They influence each other, but they are not interchangeable. Lowering pH once may improve the number on a test kit while barely changing total alkalinity.

Another common mistake is adding acid, then immediately adding an alkalinity increaser or pH increaser because the pH looks low. That can erase the progress you just made. Give the water time to circulate, retest, and make the next decision based on complete readings.

Pool chemicals are formulated and labeled for this purpose, and using the wrong product can create safety issues or introduce unwanted contaminants. It is tempting to speed things up, particularly when the pool is being used often. But water chemistry responds best to measured changes. Trying to force alkalinity down quickly can lead to low pH, etched plaster, corrosion, or a bounce-back correction that sends the water out of balance again.

Once your water is balanced, test it weekly and after major rainstorms, heavy pool use, or large water additions.
