A pool can look mostly clear and still have a layer of fine dirt, pollen, sand, or algae settling on the floor. If the pressure is already higher than its normal clean operating level, clean or backwash the filter first. Starting with a restricted filter means weaker suction and more work for you.
Brush the walls, steps, ledges, and floor before vacuuming. This step matters because it loosens material that has clung to the surface. How to vacuum a pool properly with a manual vacuum

The most commonly missed step is priming the hose. Hold the free end of the hose over a return jet until water flows through the entire hose and bubbles stop rising from the vacuum head. You can also feed the hose vertically into the pool section by section until it fills with water. The hose must be full of water before you connect it to the skimmer.
Once the hose is primed, turn the pump off briefly. Remove the skimmer basket, install the skimmer plate or vacuum adapter, and connect the filled hose. Some pool systems use a dedicated vacuum port instead. Follow the setup that matches your equipment, then restart the pump and confirm that the vacuum head has suction.

For a large amount of dead algae, heavy silt, or debris that keeps blowing back through the return jets, vacuuming to Waste can be the better option. Water bypasses the filter and exits through the backwash line, carrying debris away with it. This prevents a severely dirty filter from returning fine particles to the pool.
Vacuuming to Waste has a trade-off: it lowers the water level quickly. Watch the pool continuously and add water as needed. Never let the water fall below the skimmer opening, because the pump can lose prime and run without proper water flow.
