Chlorine-based shock is the right tool when a pool has algae, low or depleted free chlorine, or significant combined chlorine. It raises the sanitizer level, allowing chlorine to both oxidize contaminants and sanitize the water. The exact amount depends on pool volume, current free chlorine, cyanuric acid level, and the severity of the problem.

Non-chlorine shock is an oxidizer. It can be helpful after light swimmer use because it breaks down some organic waste without significantly raising chlorine. It may allow a pool to return to use sooner, depending on the product instructions and water test results. But it is not an algae treatment. If water is green, walls feel slick, or free chlorine is near zero, non-chlorine shock will not provide the sanitation needed to recover the pool.

There is also an important testing detail: some non-chlorine shock products can interfere with certain chlorine tests for a short period. If the numbers look unusually high after treatment, follow the product guidance or use a test method designed to distinguish the readings. Guessing can lead to overcorrection.

How to shock safely and effectively
