Pool Water Levels Are Important to Improve the Longevity of Your Pool
Do you know how often you need to check your pool water levels, or why they require regular checks? Most pool owners remember that their pool water levels need checking, but they do not remember how often to do it or why. There are a lot of things that can go wrong if your water levels are not consistently checked. It can damage your pool now, and it can make it to where your pool stops working and begins to break down sooner. Here are some important things to know about your pool water levels and how to keep them where they need to be.
Where Should You Pool Water Levels Be?
Ideally, you want to always keep your pool water levels just shy of the middle of your pool’s skimmer. This keeps everything in your pool working the way it is supposed to. When you get a lot of precipitation, you may need to take some of the water out of your pool to maintain the right pool water levels. However, when the weather is hot and dry, you may need to add water some of the time. Your goal should always be to keep the water right in the middle of the skimmer flaps. If you do not have skimmer flaps, then you should keep the water levels at the middle of the pool tiles.
What Happens If Your Pool Water Levels Are Too High?
When your pool water levels exceed the middle part of your pool’s skimmer, your skimmer is not going to work properly. The water flows into the skimmer at a higher level, it causes the water to not get skimmed properly. This leaves more debris in your pool, and it can cause the debris to wind up getting pumped into the wrong hoses. If the debris goes into the hoses of the pool, it can cause the hoses to get clogged. Even if the hoses do not get clogged, the debris can get into the pump, breaking it.
What Happens If Your Pool Water Levels Are Too Low?
If your pool water levels are too low, it can also cause your pump to break down. If your pump does not have enough water in it, it can run dry. This can cause your pump to overheat, and then it can break down. When the water is too low, it also does not get into your pool’s skimmer. This means that all of the debris that falls into your pool stays there. This leads to clogged hoses and pump breaks as well. Proper pool service and maintenance is extremely important.
What Can Happen If You Do Not Keep Your Pool Water Levels at the Right Height?
When you do not keep your pool water levels at the right spot, it is going to damage your pool. It can cause your skimmer or pump to break as a start, but that is not the only type of damage your pool can take. Your pool tiles can also dry out, which means they will become more brittle with time. This comes from being exposed to the effects of the sun without the protection of the water over the tiles.
Your pool’s plaster will also become more brittle if you do not keep your pool water levels at the right height. The plaster surrounding your pool needs to be kept moist. When the plaster dries out, it becomes brittle, plus it begins to erode when the water hits it. This can cause your pool to look dirty, plus throw off the chemical levels of the water. On top of ruining how your pool looks and functions, it can also cause your pool to leak. At Lone Star Pool Services, we check water levels on every visit.
Things to Remember When Adding or Removing Pool Water
There are specific things you have to keep in mind when changing your pool water levels. If your pool water is too high and you need to remove some pool water, you are going to make the chemical levels of the pool more concentrated. If your pool water is too low and you need to add in some new pool water, then you are going to dilute the chemical levels within the pool. Once you are done adding or removing water, you need to wait for a little while. Then, once you have waited a few hours, or even a few days, you need to check the levels of the chemicals within your pool.
Once you go through and check the pool’s chemical levels, you will likely need to add chemicals to balance out your pool. This may mean raising the pH level of your pool, or lowering it down to get within a safe range. You may also need to add in an algaecide to help kill off the excess algae in the pool. This is common when your pool water levels were too low to properly skim out the debris. Once you have the chemicals rebalanced, your pool is safe for people to use again.
